On May 12, 2011 (New York, NY) –
alliantgroup hosted the first of a series of landmark regional roundtable meetings with top IRS executives. Held in New York City, the meeting featured a discussion with IRS Large Business & International Division (LB&I) executives, former IRS Commissioner Mark Everson, former Senior Counsel to the Senate Finance Committee Dean Zerbe and top alliantgroup Mid-Atlantic CPA partners and clients. The purpose of this meeting was to begin a dialogue between CPAs, clients and LB&I concerning the issues that most affect small and medium sized businesses.

It was clear that both alliantgroup guests and LB&I benefitted from a candid discussion about current issues in tax administration.

IRS Roundtable Discussion
LB&I officials cited two problems in particular: lack in overall communication between taxpayers and the IRS; and second, the complexities associated with the audit process. LB&I officials noted that a priority is having IRS exam teams partner with the taxpayer from start to finish of the audit process and to create an open and consistent channel of communication. By creating a plan of action for an examination and fostering a cooperative relationship, the IRS seeks to streamline the audit process and determine the most cost-effective solution for both parties.

LB&I also briefed CPAs on two programs: Compliance Assurance Process (CAP) and Fast-Track Mediation.

“The Compliance Assurance Process (CAP) allows a client to pre-file and receive a risk assessment before actually submitting their returns. Even though CAP has been open to all taxpayers, we have prioritized increasing awareness about this program in the middle market.”
- LB&I Executive

“We find that Fast-Track Mediation is an expeditious means of resolving specific questions in an audit.” - LB&I Executive

“We would like to emphasize that we want taxpayers and IRS employees to resolve matters when possible prior to appeals and we encourage CPAs to raise issues up through the IRS management chain, Manager to Territory Manager for example, for consideration before going to appeals.”
- LB&I Executive

“By explaining the intricacies and available solutions to these problems, we hope to provide CPAs the tools necessary to give their clients a better understanding of IRS processes and to help create a smoother working relationship.”
- LB&I Executive

Washington Update
Mark Everson and Dean Zerbe provided the CPA and client attendees a briefing on the latest tax news coming out of Washington.

“Most notably, we have seen a resurgence in domestic manufacturing and a renewed focus on creating and maintaining jobs in that and other crucial areas.”
- Mark Everson, Former IRS Commissioner and Vice Chairman, alliantgroup and Dean Zerbe, National Managing Director, alliantgroup

“I am pessimistic about any significant tax reform happening in this Congress.”
- Dean Zerbe, National Managing Director, alliantgroup

In Summation
alliantgroup's work strengthens the relationship between CPAs and their clients as well as provides a voice for them. It is alliantgroup's goal to continue this dialogue with key IRS officials and our valued partners.”
– Dhaval Jadav, CEO, alliantgroup
