In an article posted on Forbes.com on April 11, 2010, Dean Zerbe discusses a report from Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) that reveals how over the last five years the Internal Revenue Service has increased the hours it spends auditing small businesses by 30% while reducing the time it spends auditing large corporations by 33%. During the same period, audit hours devoted to mid-size corporations grew by 13%. The TRAC report, Zerbe says, "makes for a revealing look at IRS audits trends--slicing and dicing the numbers over time every way come Sunday."
