As the dust settles from this tax season, many CPAs have been left with more questions than answers from the IRS with regard to the implementation of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. From complex new provisions like Section 199A to the many variables that must be considered when advising clients on corporate structures, CPAs have been left with limited guidance from the Service on how these new provisions will ultimately impact their clients.

About the Presenters:

Dean Zerbe is alliantgroup’s National Managing Director based in the firm’s Washington D.C. office. Prior to joining alliantgroup, Mr. Zerbe was Senior Counsel and Tax Counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance. He worked closely with then-Chairman and current Ranking Member of the Finance Committee, Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), on tax legislation. During his tenure on the Finance Committee, Mr. Zerbe was intimately involved with nearly every major piece of tax legislation that was signed into law – including the 2001 and 2003 tax reconciliation bills, the JOBS bill in 2004 (corporate tax reform), and the Pension Protection Act. Mr. Zerbe is a frequent speaker and author on the outlook for short-term and long-term changes in tax policy, as well as ways accounting firms can help their clients lower their tax bill. He holds an LL.M. in Taxation from NYU and a J.D. from George Mason University.

In a career devoted to government service, Steven T. Miller has spent the last 25 years with the IRS, serving the agency in a number of diverse and increasingly important roles. He served as former IRS Acting Commissioner in 2012, but prior to that Steven served for several years as the Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement, leading all IRS enforcement and service activity. Steven also served as the Commissioner of the Large and Mid-Size Business Division, overseeing IRS audits of large taxpayers and the IRS programs relating to offshore tax compliance and international tax law enforcement. As the Commissioner of the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division, he supervised the IRS oversight of governments, tax exempt entities and retirement programs.

Sonny Grover is alliantgroup’s Executive Vice President and a CPA with more than 30 years of experience. Sonny has led the alliantgroup team to help thousands of businesses claim more than $7 billion in tax incentives. Sonny specializes in the agriculture sector and through his assistance, numerous co-ops and other agribusinesses have received millions of dollars back in federal and state credits.
