Danny Werfel

    DANNY
    Former IRS Commissioner

Danny Werfel was the nation’s 50th Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, serving from 2023 to 2025. His expansive career in public service first began in 1997 with the Office of Management and Budget, and included work with the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, the Office of Federal Financial Management, the Financial Integrity and Analysis Branch, and others. Ultimately, he ascended to the position of OMB Controller, before transitioning to the private sector.

Werfel has extensive experience outside government as well. In 2014, he joined Boston Consulting Group’s Public Sector practice, working with public and private agencies on financial strategy, transformation plans, and risk-assessment initiatives. He was elected Managing Director and Partner at BCG in 2017 and was later selected by BCG’s CEO to lead its Public Sector Practice in North America.

Werfel’s deep and varied skillset is best exemplified by his many achievements as IRS Commissioner. Facing deep technological deficiencies, low customer satisfaction, and personnel challenges, Werfel led the agency’s 80,000+ employees through a momentous modernization effort. This included overseeing a 60-billion-dollar infusion of funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, spearheading the free-to-use Direct File program, as well as conducting a rigorous overhaul of the IRS’s aging technological infrastructure, focusing on digital service, security, and access.

At alliant, Danny helps guide clients with his wealth of experience in tax, public policy, and governance. He is also a leading figure in the consulting field, specializing in large-scale transformation, change management, and modernization strategy.
