First developed in 2014, epFace allows alliantgroup to optimize its energy modeling calculations, which are used to qualify the 179D tax deduction received by its clients. Architecture, engineering or construction firms that improve the energy efficiency of government-owned buildings are eligible for the 179D deduction, also known as The Energy Efficient Commercial Building Deduction.

The United States Department of Energy’s open-source software EnergyPlus provides plain data, and a graphical third-party interface software such as epFace is required for effective use of EnergyPlus to obtain the 179D deduction. epFace works with EnergyPlus by using its calculations to model building envelopes, internal loads (the heat generated by lights, equipment, people and other factors) and HVAC systems.
EnergyPlus version 8.7 was released in March of this year. The update added 25 new features for energy analysis and had 49 repairs to software defects. EnergyPlus also has an ever-growing catalog of information on HVAC, lighting and building envelope systems. Another highlight of the upgrade to 8.7 is the switch from Fortran to C++ with much faster simulation speeds.
Every six months, alliantgroup releases updates to EpFace to follow the updates to EnergyPlus.
