alliantgroup, HISD Partner for 2018 Elementary Science Teacher Award

HOUSTON, Dec. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — alliantgroup is proud to announce its partnership with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) for its 2018 Elementary Science Teacher Award.

The award will recognize elementary science teachers within HISD who are utilizing innovative teaching methods to spark student interest in the field of science. The program stems from alliantgroup and HISD’s support of integrating STEM into the lives of students at an early age.

Six finalists, each from a different HISD region, will be chosen and will each receive a cash award of $1,250, as well as an additional $500 for their classroom. One grand prize winner will be chosen and will receive a personal cash prize of $3,500, as well as $500 to put toward their classroom.

“Teachers are often the first people that spark a child’s interest in STEM, and it’s one of the greatest advantages a student can have,” alliantgroup Strategic Advisory Board Member and former U.S. Congressman Harold Ford Jr. said. “alliantgroup and HISD want to invest in those teachers who are getting creative. The teachers who really are investing their time and energy into making sure that the importance of science is clear to their students.”

The finalists will be chosen by HISD based on the applicant’s implementation of a uniquely innovative lesson plan that effectively immerses their students in the field of science. A panel of HISD, alliantgroup and higher education representatives will then choose the grand prize winner. These teachers will all be recognized not only with the cash prizes, but also media spots to highlight their commendable work.

“The Elementary Curriculum & Development department is so excited to have partnered with alliantgroup to recognize the district’s most outstanding elementary science teachers,” said Donell Williams, M.Ed., the Director of K-5 Science in the Elementary Curriculum and Development Office of HISD.

The six finalists will be chosen in February 2019, with the grand prize winner to be announced at the beginning of April. The winners will all be recognized at the alliantgroup Elementary Science Teacher Award luncheon on Tuesday, April 23, 2019.

“This partnership will support the district’s goal to increase student achievement with our youngest of scholars. We thank alliantgroup for supporting our teachers and scholars in becoming Texas and national leaders of science and STEM teaching and learning,” said Williams.

The alliantgroup Elementary Science Teacher Award was created to reward local teachers who are increasing student achievement and engagement through innovative lesson plans that emphasize both the importance and fun aspects of science. The award is just one of the many educational initiatives that alliantgroup is involved with as part of its continuing efforts to promote the importance of STEM education.
